Department of Homeland Security Blue Campaign Authorization Act of 2017

www.kennedy.senate.gov

Dear friends:

November has come and gone, and here in the Senate, we have been hard at work trying to deliver meaningful tax cuts for hard-working Americans.  Earlier this month, we passed H.R. 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.  This bill is about three things: tax cuts, jobs, and more jobs.  The American economy is stalled, and middle-class families need to see more of their hard-earned dollars in their bank accounts.  This bill helps those families while giving American job creators the freedom and flexibility they need to increase wages and add jobs.

According to the nonpartisan group the Tax Foundation, under the Senate tax bill, Louisiana will see an increase of 12,611 new jobs and the average family will gain $1,857 in after-tax income.  We doubled the standard deduction.  We doubled the child tax credit.  And we repealed the Affordable Care Act mandate that fined people for not getting insurance they couldnít afford.

Throughout the process I urged leadership to retain amendments that are important to Louisiana families like the adoption tax credit, doubling the educator expense deduction, increasing coastal restoration funding, and giving families the flexibility to save money for all stages of their childrenís education.

Click the link below to watch my video about how tax reform will help our small businesses.

Diversity Visa Lottery:

Iím working on eliminating a program that grants 50,000 visas every year through a lottery-style selection.  Visas through the diversity visa lottery program are randomly selected by a computer instead of reasonable factors such as job skills needed in the U.S.  Uzbekistani terrorist Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, who killed eight people and injured almost a dozen pedestrians in New York City on Oct. 31 this year, entered the country after obtaining a visa through the diversity visa lottery program.  Thatís why I introduced a bill with my colleague Sen. Ron Johnson to repeal this dangerous program.  Click the image below to learn more about our bill.

Latest Op-Ed:

I wrote an op-ed about parenting that was placed in the Washington Examiner.  If you have a moment, I encourage you to click the photo below to read more.  I believe that having children is a blessing. You should treat your children like the blessings they are or donít have them at all.  Our foster care system and jails already are at capacity.  Thereís no more room at the inn.

75th Anniversary of the End of World War II Commemorative Coin Act:

This Veterans Day I spoke on the floor of the Senate to honor the service and sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform.  It is imperative that we reflect upon the sacrifices our veterans made not only on Veterans Day and Memorial Day but every day.  Thatís why I have introduced the 75th Anniversary of the End of World War II Commemorative Coin Act.  Thanks to the selflessness and bravery of 16 million American military personnel like Louisianaís Ira Schilling and Earl Messmer, liberty and democracy ultimately prevailed against tyranny.  Please click the photo below to watch my full floor speech.

National Veterans and Military Families Month:

We highlighted Louisiana military families in November for National Veterans and Military Families Month.  Below are just a few of the military families who call Louisiana home.

Above is Master Sgt. Melissa Sartain from Barksdale AFB and her family. Thank you, Sgt. Sartain, for your service.

TSgt. Bianca Parker is in the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. Below is a picture of Bianca with her family. I would like to thank Bianca and her family for their sacrifice for our country.

Below is a picture of Major Nature Hicks with her husband Clifton Hicks, son Robert Riggin Jr. and daughter Corinne Heggins.  I want to thank Major Nature Hicks and her family for their sacrifice to our country.

Social Media Buzz:

Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to keep up with whatís happening in Washington and Louisiana.  Below are a few highlights from Facebook over the past few weeks.

During the tax reform debate, I called for the protection of the adoption tax credit.  Itís pro-life and pro-families.  I encouraged my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure that this tax credit stayed in place, and I am proud to say that in the Senate bill we kept this important credit.

It was a pleasure having LSU President F. King Alexander stop by my office last month. Geaux Tigers!

I visited with some of Louisianaís best and brightest students.

Last week, I took a few moments to send some Christmas cards to our veterans overseas.  This holiday season be sure to thank our service men and women.

My wife, Becky, and I went to the White House for the Congressional Christmas party.  It was a great night full of beautiful holiday lights.
